What documents you need for your tax return
A well-prepared return starts with complete documents. Most of the amendments we prepare happen because a form arrived late or was forgotten.
Identification
Social Security numbers or ITINs for you, your spouse and your dependents, with dates of birth, and last year's return.
Income
W-2s from each employer; 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC for independent work; 1099-K from payment platforms; 1099-INT and 1099-DIV from banks and investments; 1099-B for sales of stock or cryptocurrency; 1099-R for retirement plan distributions; SSA-1099 if you receive Social Security; and K-1s if you are a partner in a business.
Deductions and credits
Form 1098 for mortgage interest, the property tax receipt, donation receipts, Form 1098-T if you pay tuition, and the name, address and ID number of your child care provider. If you have Marketplace health insurance, Form 1095-A is required.
Your own business and rentals
A summary of the year's income and expenses, with bank statements, and the expenses for each rental property.
Abroad
The maximum balance of each account outside the United States during the year, the income from those accounts and details of foreign companies you hold an interest in.
Payments already made
Dates and amounts of the estimated payments you made during the year. Everything is uploaded to our secure portal, never by email.
